Aluvia, Malbec, Mendoza 2023
96pts James Suckling
This vibrant and versatile wine highlights the distinctive minerality of Gualtallary’s calcareous soils, with noticeable chalky notes. On the palate, it features sharp, lingering tannins and a refined, elegant ending.
The vineyard is located in Gualtallary, a district of Tupungato in the Uco Valley, home to the highest-altitude vineyards in Mendoza. Its combination of poor soils, climate, and elevation creates an exceptional terroir. The soil consists of medium alluvial stones covered with calcareous patinas, mixed with sand and limestone deposits. The region experiences fresh days and cold nights, enhancing the balance and complexity of its wines.
Harvest takes place at the end of March. The grapes are handharvested and gently destemmed without crushing the berries. Fermentation occurs in stainless steel tanks, followed by a postfermentation maceration of approximately 25 days. The wine is then aged for 16 months in second- and third-use French oak barrels.
